Three Peeks at Three Peaks!
Jon Hibbert was determined to complete the 24-hour Three Peak Challenge in order to raise funds for the Motor Neurone Disease Association in memory of his grandmother, Mabel Collett.
Two close friends from his schooldays at Bournemouth School, James Flynn and Dave Collier, gave him valuable support by joining him for the climbs and his sister, Julia, and dad, Derek, completed the team by volunteering to do the driving.
The team left Bournemouth at 5.30 am on 28 May and reached the foot of Ben Nevis at 6 pm. Setting off in driving rain at 6.10 pm, the group returned just under 4.5 hours later.
Driving through the night, they arrived at Seathwaite Farm at around 4.15 am the next day to attempt Scafell Pike, only to be ‘welcomed’ by gale force winds and torrential rain. They set off at 5 am, returning saturated after 5.5 hours and successfully scaling the summit.
The final leg of the Challenge, Snowdon, was completed without rain the lads’ determination to meet the Challenge was epitomised by them running part-way down Snowdon in order to finish within the 24 hours with just a few minutes to spare. Tired and blistered from their weekend away, the group arrived home in Bournemouth at around 2.30 am on the Monday, looking forward to some much-needed sleep.
At the time of writing, the lads’ efforts have raised in excess of £600 to help fight Motor Neurone Disease. Further support to the group’s efforts was made through provision of the transport by Proof-check.com and by U-Drive, who gave a generous discount on the rental costs.
