"Entry by donation to the East Dorset and New Forest branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association." ************************************************************************************************************************************************************ FIFTH ANNUAL MND QUIZ NIGHT
Imagine a bridesmaid. I doubt if you see an overweight man with grey hair and straggly beard but that is what Betty’s quiz has reduced me to. Coming second again it is surely a case of “Always the Bridesmaid never the Bride” for me and my team. (But who is counting?) Again Betty and Gil showed you do not have to be abusive to entertain and the BBC need look no further for the replacements for Jonathon Ross. Indeed with the charisma of Anne Robinson, without the acerbic wit, Betty is undoubtedly the finest quiz mistress in the UK handling with aplomb technical disasters, the delayed (but very tasty) buffet and rowdy sections of the audience. Indeed the evening was another triumph for our very own Richard and Judy marred only by the fact that Gil made up some answers – I ask you who will believe the explanation of LEXUS!! Otherwise the questions were a very fair test of knowledge examining in depth the fields of History Geography Medicine et al. I regret that I spent so much time rereading the Bible but I am sure my soul will have benefited It was fitting that posthumous tribute was paid to Jack Burkitt for the section of questions that he had submitted. Again thanks must go to all who donated to the monster raffle which is now an established part of the evening. Indeed the range of prizes on offer caused as much indecision among winning ticket holders as some of the more obscure questions. Thanks must go to all concerned with the evening that was an unqualified success. In addition to the fun of the evening itself £475 were raised for the Branch funds. A truly worthwhile evening all round. We all know it is taking part that counts but fair warning; I have already started recruiting my team for next year. Mike Hardy

We did it…
We are two sisters who on Sunday 14th September set off on our bikes and cycled 312 miles from Lou's house in the north, Ramsbottom (North Manchester) to our step Dad's house in Broadstone, Dorset to help him with his fight against Motor Neurone Disease. We spent five days cycling through Leek, Warwick, Oxford and Winchester, met some wonderful people, were provided with free accommodation through media interest in each stop off (a pub. two lovely four star hotels, and university accommodation in Oxford!) and raised an extra £300 along the way. On Thursday 18th September we arrived at Mum and our step dad Jack's house in Dorset for an overwhelming welcome...it was very worth the sore knees, achy legs and bruised bottoms! Friends, family and MND representatives joined us last Friday 19th September for a celebration get together.
Since our step Dads diagnoses in August 2007 Jack and our mum, Waveney, have seen their lives change tremendously as Jack lost use of his hands, arms, legs and his ability to speak. So very sadly Jack lost his fight against MND and died shortly after the bike ride - however his amazing determination enabled him to enjoy memories of seeing us finish the bike ride and being with friends and family afterwards. He was overwhelmed and so grateful of everyone’s generosity and support. At the last count we have raised well over £7,000 and hoped to have also generated further awareness of the disease. We have been so very touched with everyone's heart felt generosity. We are hopeful that it will make a difference for all those and their families fighting MND and for the wonderful work and crucial support the MND Association and the NHS provide. Coffee Mornings/Get - Togethers In earlier Newsletters, we mentioned the Coffee Mornings, which are now also known as Get - Togethers’, which were held for those people affected by Motor Neurone Disease together with their carers. These are still ongoing and alternating between Barton-on-Sea and Canford Magna. These will never be huge gatherings but they are getting larger in numbers and do enable those affected to meet together informally.

Both went very and raised a good amount for the branch funds. The quiz night was attended by 70+ entrants organised into teams of 6 (approximately!) and this years winning team was a different team from the previous quiz nights. Maybe because they didn't enter a team this year! The event was run using a 'leader board' this time so that teams could see how they were doing after each round of the quiz. A similar idea to that used on some TV shows but not so flash. The raffle had some good prizes as usual so thanks to all who contributed the prizes. The event raised £485 which was very good. Thanks to the Hamworthy Social Club for providing the venue and the food. The Craft fayre was apparently literally buzzing with people and did very well. I didn't go to that so can't really comment on the event in itself but I understand that a very significant sum was raised. Well done to everybody that was involved with running that event. I have since received a letter and some photos relating to this event so I will write some of the information here. It seems that in the New Milton area a group has been developed called the 'R US' fundraisers. Apparently what goes in front of 'R US' is determined by the event which it seems can range from 'Bric-a-Brac R US' to 'Boot Sales R US'. Sandra and Melanie have got together and are managing the events in that area of our branch and throughout 2007 have made in excess of £2300 from sales and donations. A well deserved well done must go to them and all the friends etc that have helped them. A couple of photos of the Xmas Craft Fayre are shown below.
We can now look forward to the events that will take place during 2008. Gil Rice Annual MNDA Tea Party Canford 2008
Lacrimosa suggests to me tears and distress. This was certainly true of our guest entertainers at the Annual Tea Party, they had me in fits of tears and caused Michele and I mild distress as I howled with laughter at their version of The Twelve days after Christmas. Under orders I had to resort to an old remedy and stuff a tissue in my mouth to silence the unseemly guffaws. A polished act from ones so young and confident, arguably the best entertainment yet, they set the seal on another friendly and enjoyable Tea Party. It was a double special day for Margaret who was presented with a framed picture to mark her 80th birthday The goodies on offer lived up to and excelled the legendary spreads of yesteryear and the usual “Doggie Bags “were handed out at the end. Our thanks must go the ladies of the committee and friends for their unsurpassed work in providing such treats on a regular basis. Much talk was of the forthcoming art exhibition at Upton House and the quality of the work that will be on display is exceptional and on one hand highlights how unforgiving MND can be but also how it may damage the body but it can’t alter the spirit and personality of our indomitable members. It is this spirit and sense of camaraderie that is epitomised by our meetings, no time for moaning and mourning but a celebration of what can be still achieved from a cup that is half full not half empty. No where is this better shown than how Pat Marven has adapted her creative talents to the task of raising funds for the branch achieving sales in excess of £48 during the afternoon. Long may the gatherings continue. Mike Hardy
Walk to D'feet MND June 2008
The faceless bureaucrats who dreamt up the need to have a risk assessment and triplicate lists of participants and their mode of transport met their match in our Judith. The General was in fine form mustering the troops, keeping morale high and ensuring we were visible but not obtrusive! The people of that stretch of beach have short arms, long pockets and very good memories. One sight of our red T-shirts sent them scurrying for shelter but to no avail. Our bin-toting ladies are skilled in the subtle arts of charming blood from stones and did their usual sterling work, although it was remarked that more people refused even to take an information leaflet than ever before; the Credit Crunch in action? We set off in a well ordered caravan of 31 adults, children and even a dog with Wagon Master Gil blazing the trail and setting the pace. (For those interested he did it AGAIN, wearing matching brown shoes, tan chinos and the red T-shirt identical to my outfit. Does the man know no shame?) Reaching the haven of half way Val provided the refreshments but not bothering to rest our resolute ladies ventured on and even stopped one cycling party in their tracks ensuring a rapid retreat from whence they came. We returned to base braving a sand storm straight out of the pages of Beau Geste and one belligerent cyclist who raced through us at full speed ringing his bell like he owned the road. The General was lady like in her admonishment but I personally hope his spokes bend and his crank rusts solid. All in all another successful event that kept the profile high and added to our coffers. Well done to all who took part in what has become a pleasant social occasion fast developing into a tradition. Having been so rude about the residents of Sand Banks the total collected on the walk was a healthy £137 so I have to admit they can’t all be bad Mike Hardy
